Exploring the Shift in Airbnb: From Heads in Beds to Iconic Experiences.

BY BRIT PORTREY |

AUGUST 08, 2024

It’s no secret that Airbnb is still an ever-evolving world of how to dominate the passive income market. Whether you're new to the Airbnb game or a seasoned Host, understanding the latest trends and strategies is crucial.

The Newest Evolution of Airbnb: From Heads in Beds to Iconic Experiences

Airbnb has come a long way since its inception, evolving from a simple platform for finding a place to stay to a brand synonymous with unique, memorable experiences. This transformation is best exemplified by the introduction of Airbnb Icons—a campaign that marks a significant shift from just providing accommodations to offering fully immersive experiences.

As Justin, owner of James Grey Rentals, explains, "Airbnb Icons is a response to the growing competitiveness in the hospitality industry. We've seen this trend with boutique hotels investing heavily in design and amenities, and Airbnb is following suit by creating unique, one-of-a-kind stays."

Airbnb Icons: A Game Changer in Hospitality

The Airbnb Icons campaign kicked off with the Barbie Dream House, tied to the release of the Barbie movie, and has since expanded to include a range of incredible experiences. From staying at a Ferrari museum to spending a night in the iconic Up House, Airbnb Icons are designed to captivate the imagination and offer guests something truly special.

Brit, Creative Director of James Grey Rentals and co-host of The Rental Blueprint, highlights the intent behind this shift: "Airbnb’s CEO mentioned that the goal is to capture a sense of wonder and allow guests to stay in places they've only dreamed of. Partnering with brands like Disney underscores this ambition."

What Does This Mean for Everyday Hosts?

For Airbnb hosts every day, this shift towards experience-driven stays means it's no longer enough to simply offer a clean and safe space. The focus is increasingly on creating a memorable experience that stands out in a crowded market.

Justin notes, "The Airbnb market has become incredibly competitive. In the last two years alone, we've seen the number of properties quadruple, making it essential for hosts to offer something unique."

Whether it’s a Harry Potter-themed stay, a Hocus Pocus-inspired home, or a cozy treehouse in California, niching down and offering a distinctive experience can set you apart from the competition.

So, what do you think? Are Airbnb Icons catalyzing a non-revocable shift in the way the average Airbnb owner approaches their investment property? Seems like we need to find out or get left behind.

Happy hosting!
